Stalked by memories
Ashippun – Dodge County Sheriff’s Detective Bob Neuman shivered in the cold and looked out at the snow-covered cornfield this week.
The field, the road, the trees all looked different on the day Neuman answered the call from a neighbor walking his dog who smelled something bad. It was the first day of what would end up being a month of 16-hour work days for Neuman and other Dodge County investigators.
Neuman remembered Sept. 14, 1997, as a cloudy day, damp after a rain, the cornstalks tall and green and laden with ears of corn. Aside from the odor, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. But at the base of the stalks was the badly decomposed body of Christine Stenulson clad in jeans and white sneakers with her jacket and shirt pulled up over her head. She had been stabbed in the abdomen.
