Saanich’s unsolved murders

Cheri Lynn Smith had turned 18 a couple weeks before disappearing from the streets of downtown Victoria in June of 1990. She and her boyfriend – or rather, her pimp – fled from Saskatchewan in May, right before she was supposed to appear in court on solicitation charges resulting from a police prostitution sting.

“The last 20 years has allowed us to mature and become more capable emotionally and mentally and spiritually to deal with the trauma that solving her murder would bring,” says her mother Linda Smith from her Regina home. Her daughter’s body was found decomposing in a forested area off Munn’s Road.

“A lot of times (Victoria) is the end of the road for people,” Sgt. Darryl Harris with the Saanich police says.

Cheri was last seen alive in the area around Yates and Government streets about 1:30 a.m., June 4, 1990. She was working as a sex trade worker, but it was a lifestyle she didn’t enjoy.
