Psychic medium John Edward is no stranger to criticism, being, as he is, in the business of interpreting dead people’s messages to the bereaved in front of large audiences.
During the course of his 25-year career, the star of Crossing Over, which airs on the American Syfy Channel, has been accused of using cheap tricks and simple cold-reading techniques to exploit vulnerable people. His sensitivity and taste have been questioned, perhaps most vocally when the network aired his 9/11 special featuring relatives of the victims, two months after the event.
Yet the believers outweigh the detractors. As well as his TV program, book signings and private clients who pay $US750 ($911) for a reading, Edward maintains a gruelling touring schedule across the US and internationally. When he returns to Australia for the 11th time in November, there will be one Melbourne radio station missing from his exhaustive publicity trail.
